Maybe Boring Is the Point

Attention, quiet effort, and the underrated luxury of knowing what you can count on.

Tomorrow is my birthday.

Birthdays have a way of making me take inventory, whether I intend to or not. Not only of what I have done or where I thought I might be by now, but of what I have come to value.

And I have been thinking lately about how much that list has changed.

When I was younger, I was drawn to dynamism. Big personalities. Big ideas. People who could walk into a room and change its temperature.

I still am.

I have written before about my affection for big personalities, and I haven't changed my mind. I like people with range. People who are curious and passionate and occasionally a little too much. Give me the interesting dinner conversation. Give me the person with twelve ideas before breakfast. Give me some electricity.

What has changed is what I believe needs to exist underneath it.

I used to think excitement and stability lived on opposite ends of some spectrum. That predictability meant sacrificing a little aliveness. That the people who gave you butterflies couldn't possibly also be the people who made life feel easy.

I don't believe that anymore.

The opposite of boring isn't interesting.

Sometimes it's simply unpredictable.

There is a quote that has circulated for years, usually attributed to Buddhist wisdom. It says, roughly, that when you meet someone and your heart pounds, your hands shake and your knees go weak, that is not the person for you at all. The person meant for you may feel remarkably different.

CALM.

No anxiety. No agitation.

Not every butterfly is love.

Sometimes the sensation we call chemistry is anticipation. Sometimes it is novelty. Sometimes it is uncertainty. Sometimes our bodies are responding not to how much we want someone, but to the fact that we aren't entirely sure what is going to happen next.

That doesn't make butterflies bad. I still want butterflies.

I have simply become more interested in what happens after they land.

Growing older is learning that I don't have to choose between the person who changes the temperature of the room and the person who remembers the reservation.

The magic is finding both.

The magic is being both.

We tend to notice effort when it announces itself.

The grand gesture. The extraordinary save. The person who stays until midnight to fix the problem, flies across the country to apologize, makes the sweeping declaration, or finds exactly the right words after something has gone terribly wrong.

We are remarkably good at recognizing the effort required to repair a rupture. We are less practiced at noticing the effort that might have prevented one.

But I have become increasingly interested in another kind of effort. The kind that is much easier to miss precisely because, when it is done well, very little happens.

They learned how you received love, not only how they preferred to give it. They remembered what mattered to you even when it didn't matter particularly to them. They noticed when you were tired. They handled the small thing before it became another thing you had to carry. They thought about how their choices would land on you before making them. They regulated themselves before bringing you a difficult conversation instead of handing you their first emotional reaction. They paid attention when no one was watching. They kept the promise nobody was checking.

There is something almost unfair about quiet effort. The better someone becomes at making things easier, the easier it is to underestimate how much they are actually doing.

We experience the ease. We don't always see the architecture underneath it.

Leadership has its own fascination with dynamism. We notice the charismatic leader, the visionary, the person who commands the room. Presence matters. Vision matters. The ability to move people matters.

But charisma without reliability eventually becomes exhausting.

Research on executive performance has found that reliable delivery — consistently doing what you said you would do — matters considerably more than most leadership frameworks suggest.

Reliability. Not exactly the quality that gets someone cast in the movie.

There is a similar misunderstanding in relationships.

Emotional predictability can sound dangerously close to boring until you have experienced its opposite.

And I have.

I have loved people who were electric and unreliable in equal measure. And I spent a long time feeling unseen in the spaces between the sparks. Some of what I called chemistry was simply my nervous system recognizing something familiar. Trauma bonding has a way of feeling like destiny.

I know what it is like to mistake intensity for depth. To believe that because something created a powerful feeling in me, it must therefore be important. To be drawn toward people, opportunities, and experiences partly because I couldn't quite predict what would happen next.

There can be something intoxicating about uncertainty. We call it chemistry. Adventure. Passion.

Sometimes it is those things.

Sometimes it is simply uncertainty.

It has taken me years to understand the difference.

Emotional predictability doesn't mean someone is never angry, complicated, spontaneous, anxious, passionate, or difficult. It means you generally know who you are going to meet when you walk through the door. Their care for you does not disappear because they are having a bad day. A disagreement doesn't suddenly put the entire relationship on trial. You don't have to continuously read the room to determine where you stand.

At work, it means a leader's expectations don't mysteriously change with their mood. Feedback isn't punishment. Disagreement doesn't threaten belonging. People can spend their attention doing their jobs instead of monitoring the emotional weather.

There is tremendous energy in not having to guess.

What we sometimes call boring is simply the absence of unnecessary uncertainty.

And then there is attention.

Attention may be one of the purest forms of care.

Attention says: your experience registers with me.

It is remembering how someone takes their coffee, but it is also noticing they have become quieter than usual. It is knowing which conversation needs to happen today and which one can wait until tomorrow. It is recognizing that someone has already had a difficult day and deciding not to make them carry something unnecessary simply because you want immediate relief from carrying it yourself.

It is noticing without always needing to be asked.

In organizations, attention looks remarkably similar. The best leaders notice what makes work unnecessarily difficult. They see the employee who has been compensating for a broken process. They recognize when a team needs clarity rather than another motivational speech. They notice friction before it becomes failure.

Attention produces effort, but much of that effort happens where nobody can see it.

Much of this work is invisible by design. Someone prepared so you didn't have to scramble. Someone remembered because they wrote it down. Someone noticed because they had been listening. Someone absorbed complexity before passing it along.

The absence of chaos is not always evidence that nothing happened. Sometimes it is evidence that someone was paying attention.

What looks effortless from the outside is often the result of considerable effort behind the scenes.

And consistency is simply that effort repeated.

Not perfectly. Not endlessly. Not at the expense of one's own needs. Healthy consistency is not self-erasure, and attentiveness is not hypervigilance. There is a difference between caring about another person's experience and becoming responsible for it.

But when attention, quiet effort, emotional predictability, and consistency are reciprocal, something interesting happens.

Trust becomes almost ordinary.

There are fewer dramatic repairs because fewer unnecessary ruptures are created. There are fewer heroic rescues because someone noticed the problem while it was still small. There is less wondering where you stand because the relationship, whether personal or professional, does not require constant interpretation.

And life eventually teaches us why all of this matters.

We get older. Beauty changes. Bodies get sick. Parents die. People we love die. Grief arrives without checking whether it is a convenient time. Money gets tight. Markets turn. Careers stall. Businesses struggle. Children need us. Plans fall apart. There are years when life looks nothing like the version we imagined.

Those are the seasons when the things we once called boring start to look a lot like love and leadership.

You begin to understand the value of the partner who will stay awake with you at three in the morning when there is nothing they can fix. The one who drives hours just to sit beside you in the hospital, who makes dinner when you have forgotten to eat, who doesn't need you to be okay in order to stay close. The one who can carry a little more when you temporarily cannot, knowing that someday it may be your turn to carry them.

You begin to value the friend who keeps calling even when you haven't been particularly good at calling back. The family member who simply shows up. The quiet acts of care that would never make an interesting photograph but somehow become the things you remember.

Work reveals the same truth. When the market is good and the numbers are up, charisma can look a lot like leadership. You learn more when things aren't. When revenue falls, people are scared, a strategy fails, or the future becomes uncertain, what people need from leadership is rarely another performance. They need someone whose behavior remains recognizable under pressure. Someone who tells the truth. Someone who doesn't manufacture panic to demonstrate urgency. Someone reliable.

What remains is surprisingly ordinary.

Who stayed.

Who noticed.

Who could be counted on.

Who made the hard season a little easier to survive.

Maybe this is one of the things I am taking with me into another year of my life.

When I think about what I want now, the picture has become surprisingly simple.

I want an herb garden. Work that excites me and enough quiet around it to finish the books I keep promising myself I will write. Long dinners with people I love. A home that feels good to come back to. I want to watch the seasons change somewhere beautiful enough that I still stop to notice them.

I want an adoring partnership. The kind where we remain fascinated by each other's worlds, but neither of us has to wonder if the other is staying.

I want to laugh a lot. And I want somewhere, and someone, I am always glad to come home to.

Boring, apparently.

And I find that incredibly funny because a younger version of me might have looked at that list and wondered when I became so domesticated. Where is the grand ambition? The next extraordinary thing?

The ambition is still here. So is the appetite for adventure. I still want to build things that haven't existed before. I still want rooms full of interesting people and projects, ideas that keep me awake, stamps in my passport, and the occasional decision that makes everyone who loves me quietly question my sanity.

I just don't want chaos to be the admission price anymore. I have paid it. What it cost me was peace. And I am done negotiating with that particular exchange.

I don't want less passion. I don't want less adventure. I certainly don't want smaller personalities.

I want all of it built on something quieter.

Give me the person who changes the temperature of the room, but not the temperature of the relationship. Give me someone who keeps me curious without keeping me guessing.

Give me the friend who calls when I'm quiet. The colleague whose word I can trust. The leader who remains recognizable under pressure. The person who considers how their choices will land before asking someone else to carry them.

Give me butterflies.

But give them somewhere safe to land.

Peace isn't the absence of adventure or chemistry. It's being fully alive without having to be on alert.

Because eventually the vacation ends. The launch is over. The applause stops. The beautiful dinner becomes dishes in the sink. The birthday passes. Monday becomes Tuesday, and then another Tuesday arrives.

We spend so much of our lives chasing people, places, and possibilities that give us butterflies that we overlook the ones that give us Tuesdays.

And a life is mostly Tuesdays.
