I've been thinking about how often we evaluate the most important parts of our lives during the moments we're least equipped to see them clearly.
We question our careers when we're burned out. We wonder if we're healthy after one abnormal test. We decide we're failing as parents after the hardest week we've had in years. And we question whether we're loved during the very seasons when life is asking the most of the people around us.
It's an odd habit.
We make some of our biggest judgments at precisely the moments when our perception is least reliable.
Psychologists have known for decades that stress changes more than our behavior. It changes our attention. Under pressure, the brain becomes more vigilant, scanning for threat and trying to predict what might go wrong next. Ambiguity becomes harder to tolerate, so the mind fills in the blanks. A delayed reply becomes rejection. A difficult few weeks become a failing relationship. One setback becomes proof that we've chosen the wrong career.
The story feels true because our nervous system is trying to create certainty in the middle of uncertainty.
But making sense isn't the same as seeing clearly.
And there is something else stress seems to do that I've been thinking about lately. It changes our relationship with time.
When we're frightened or exhausted, the present can begin masquerading as the future. A hard month starts feeling like a permanent condition. Someone's temporary withdrawal begins to look like their new personality. A difficult season at work becomes evidence that nothing will ever change. We stop asking, What is happening right now? and quietly begin answering a much larger question: Is this what my life is going to be?
Those are not the same question.
Perhaps part of what so many of us are feeling has less to do with our individual lives than the moment we're living through.
Sometimes I look around and think: of course people are anxious. The world beneath our feet is changing.
I know what it feels like to watch an entire profession shift before you've had time to understand what the shift means. To have spent years building something — a skill, a practice, a way of being useful — and to suddenly wonder whether the ground underneath it is still solid.
It's no wonder so many people are quietly asking a question that goes far beyond work.
Who am I now?
Not as a passing thought. As something that sits with you at night. That follows you into conversations you didn't expect. That surfaces when you look at the life you've built and wonder whether the ground underneath it is still solid.
But I'm beginning to think there is another question underneath that one.
Who am I becoming?
We don't ask that question as easily because becoming doesn't offer much certainty. There are periods in life when an old understanding of ourselves has stopped making sense and whatever comes next hasn't fully arrived. We want the transition to explain itself before it has finished changing us.
Sometimes “I don't know yet” isn't confusion.
It's accuracy.
And this is where uncertainty becomes especially interesting, because the same nervous system that can exaggerate danger can also make us overlook possibility.
A door can be opening while we're still grieving the one that closed.
Something genuinely good can be happening while part of us is still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
An opportunity can feel exciting and frightening at exactly the same time.
We tend to think that the right decision should arrive with certainty. But many of the most meaningful decisions of our lives don't feel that way. A new or deepening relationship. A move. A career change. Building something that doesn't exist yet. Saying yes to another person. Saying yes to ourselves.
Fear isn't always a warning.
Sometimes fear is simply what possibility feels like before we know how the story ends.
There are moments when wisdom isn't eliminating uncertainty before we move. It's noticing that underneath the uncertainty, something feels alive. Something is asking for our attention. And perhaps we don't need to know where every road leads before allowing ourselves to take seriously the one that feels worth walking.
Sometimes we have to say yes to the good feeling before we have enough evidence to guarantee the outcome.
That doesn't mean abandoning discernment. Quite the opposite. It means learning to distinguish between intuition and alarm, between a genuine warning and the nervous system's understandable discomfort with not knowing.
That distinction matters in relationships, too.
Stress has an especially convincing way of turning inward. When life becomes uncertain, we don't only wonder whether everything around us is okay. We begin wondering whether we are okay.
Am I enough?
Am I contributing enough?
Am I still wanted here?
And once that question takes hold, we start looking for evidence.
Someone is quieter than usual. We notice.
They need space. We notice.
Their attention is divided. We notice.
What we may not notice are the hundred ordinary pieces of evidence pointing in the other direction.
The person who is overwhelmed and still reaches for us. The partner who may not have the right words but keeps showing up. The conversation that went better than it would have a year ago. The apology that came sooner. The effort being made imperfectly but consistently. The ways someone is loving us that don't happen to look like the reassurance our fear is asking for in that particular moment.
Fear has a strange accounting system. It gives enormous weight to evidence of what might be wrong and discounts evidence of what is already right.
Sometimes we aren't standing in front of evidence that something is wrong. We're standing inside something unfinished.
This is one of the crueler things about fear: sometimes it recruits us into creating the very thing we're afraid of.
We worry that someone is pulling away, so we protect ourselves by pulling away first. We fear we're not enough, so we become defensive when reassurance doesn't arrive in exactly the form we need. We interpret distraction as disinterest, respond to the disinterest we think we see, and suddenly two people who were both frightened of losing connection have created distance between them.
The prophecy begins fulfilling itself.
This is why self-awareness under pressure matters so much. Not because we should distrust every uncomfortable feeling, but because feelings influence behavior, behavior changes relationships, and relationships eventually produce evidence.
Sometimes what looks like confirmation is actually participation.
I've been the distracted one. The quieter one. The one who had less to give than I wanted to. And I've been the one on the other side, waiting to see if someone was still there.
I know both sides of this.
Sometimes we look at someone we love and wonder why they seem different. Why they're quieter. More distracted. Less emotionally available than they used to be.
That's not the wrong question.
It's simply not the first one.
The first might be:
How much of what I'm seeing belongs to the person, and how much belongs to what they're carrying?
That question doesn't ask us to explain everything away. Context should make us more curious, not less discerning. There is a difference between giving someone grace for a difficult season and explaining away a pattern indefinitely.
Love does not require us to abandon our own perception.
But neither should we confuse a season with a character.
Sometimes what we're witnessing is not character being revealed, but capacity being exceeded. Learning to tell the difference may be one of the more generous forms of discernment.
Stress doesn't only change how we behave. It changes how we interpret everyone else's behavior too.
This is where love asks something difficult of us.
Not to solve one another's problems. Not to become therapists. Not to pretend everything is okay.
But to lean in before we pull away. To become curious before becoming certain. To reach for a hand before the silence grows larger than the truth.
And this isn't only true in love. A colleague's difficult week is not necessarily disengagement. A leader under enormous pressure is not necessarily becoming a different person.
Teams need this too. Families need it. Partnerships need it.
There is an old Buddhist teaching about the second arrow. The first arrow is the pain itself: the disappointment, the loss, the uncertainty, the thing we could not prevent. The second arrow is what we add to it. The story we tell. The conclusion we reach. The judgment we make about ourselves or someone else while we're still bleeding from the first.
I've always understood that teaching as an invitation not to create unnecessary suffering.
Lately, I think there is another dimension to it.
Sometimes the second arrow doesn't only deepen our pain.
It makes us miss what's still possible.
We become so occupied with protecting ourselves from what might go wrong that we cannot see what is trying to go right.
We don't simply see the world as it is. We see it through the condition of our own mind. An agitated mind reaches for certainty. A frightened mind searches for confirmation. A settled mind can hold something more complicated: that life can be uncertain and promising at the same time.
This is the deeper discipline our time requires.
Not becoming faster at reaching conclusions.
Becoming wiser about when our conclusions can be trusted.
Knowing when fear is telling us something important, and when it's simply frightened because the future hasn't introduced itself yet.
Knowing when something is a pattern, and when it's a season.
Knowing when to wait.
And knowing when, despite not having every answer, something good has appeared at the door and it is time to say yes.
Some seasons reveal who we are. Others reveal that we've been living through an earthquake.
And sometimes, while the ground is still shaking, a door opens.
And love, at its best, is not the promise that the ground will stop moving.
It's looking at the person beside you while it still is and saying,
